Course Description This course will focus on helping students improve their conversational Spanish as a critical building block towards being able to communicate with Spanish speaking patients and family members in a medical setting. The course is designed for students who have only a basic prior exposure or knowledge of Spanish. There will be an introduction and review of practical vocabulary, expressions, medical terminology and cultural aspects of communicating with native Spanish speakers. Students will be expected to practice speaking Spanish with one another in class and with invited assistants and guests. Students with more advanced Spanish knowledge are also welcome to participate and improve on their medical terminology as well. The Spanish educational telenovela "Destinos" will be viewed together as a group for several minutes towards the beginning of each class to provide some practical exposure and scenarios on which further discussion and practice sessions will be based. Learning Objectives: This course will help medical students develop or improve their basic communication skills when interacting with Spanish speaking patients and/or family members. Students will learn how to appropriately greet someone in Spanish, and how to perform a basic medical interview in Spanish. Students should finish the course with an expanded Spanish vocabulary, be able to understand and express important basic concepts related to common medical conditions in Spanish. Unique aspects of Hispanic culture should also be understood and appreciated including the importance of greetings and body language.
