Course Description
The Acute Care Surgery AI course is designed to provide the student with a more intensive and extensive experience in all aspects of care of patients with emergent general surgery needs. Clinical aspects include the initial evaluation, assessment, resuscitation, and definitive care of patients with acute, emergent surgical problems. The student serves as the Acting Intern on a service with supervision from surgical residents and ACS attendings. Routine duties include rounding on and presenting established patients on the team, seeing new consults and admissions and staffing them with the chief resident and/or the attending, and active involvement in the management of those consults/admissions, whether non-operative or operative. There is direct supervision of the intra-operative experience by the resident house staff and faculty members. Learning Objectives: The overall goal of this course is to prepare the student to be a competent and capable intern, whether surgical intern or other specialty. During the rotation, students will a.) formulate assessments and care plans based on history, physical exam findings, and laboratory/radiologic data; b.) practice presenting new and established patients, of varying degree of complexity, to house staff and faculty members; c.) demonstrate basic surgical skills and knot-tying techniques in the operating room, with supervision and feedback from resident house staff and faculty members; d.) develop skills and confidence associated with being a productive and efficient intern.
