Course Description
Child abuse affects 1% of childreneach year and 1/7 children overall, making this disorder more common than asthma, diabetes, and cancer combined. The participating student will be immersed into this subspecialty through a combination of presentations, observations, group discussions, individual readings, interactive video training, and direct clinical activities. Learning Objectives: 1.) Develop an understanding of current medical and legal findings, types, incidence and overall impact of child abuse; 2) learn recommended approach for medical assessment of children who may have been maltreated; 3) learn the more common presentations of child abuse.

Requirements
1) Attend and assist in medical evaluation clinics each week (typically 2 or 3 per week); 2) complete assigned readings (provided to student at start of elective); 3) complete assigned online learning modules (access provided at start of elective); 4) participate in inpatient consultations; 5) tour the CHIPS Center and learn about services provided; 6) prepare and present a 20-minute presentation on one aspect of child abuse of student’s choosing.
Evaluation
Pass/Fail. Students will be evaluated on active participation, completion of reading assignments and online training modules. Students will prepare and give a 20 minute presentation on one aspect of child abuse.
