Course Description Rap A Hope is a non-profit camp for children with cancer which provides a one week, life changing experience for children who have, or have had, cancer. The June week-long camp is for all children, regardless of diagnosis, ages 6 through 17. All children are welcome, and there is no charge to the camper or their families. While your specific role (cabin counselor, activity staff, medical team, etc.) at the camp will be determined in conjunction with the program director, everyone participating can expect to interact with the campers and help ensure a fun and safe environment. As a counselor, you are responsible for living with the children in the cabin, helping them with the activities of the day, and making sure that everyone is safe and having fun. Food and lodging will be provided with no charge to the student. Student Learning Objective: Students will gain an appreciation of challenges that on-therapy and off-therapy childhood cancer patients face on a daily basis through observation and interaction in a non-clinical setting. Students will learn strategies to effectively communicate with campers of different ages and have the opportunity to learn from the child while simultaneously teaching lifelong skills.
Where To Report Camp Grace lodge for orientation and training on Saturday morning before camp. Registration for camp and the arrival of the kids will be the next day. The exact time of training and registration varies from year to year and can be found by contacting the camp Director.
Requirements To earn credit for the course, students must: 1)attend a required SOM orientation before the camp experience begins (this is in addition to whatever orientation the camp requires), 2) complete two written assignments over the course of the camp, and 3) attend a debriefing meeting in the fall once classes resume.
Evaluation Pass/Fail; class participation and attendance; verification of duties from Camp Rap A Hope Director.
