Course Description
This course is designated to expose the student to the breadth of knowledge required to care for critically ill pediatric patients seen in the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit at Huntsville Hospital for Women and Children. The student will make rounds in the PICU each morning with the Critical Care team and spend time reviewing the medical literature on the pathophysiology of the conditions seen there. The course will emphasize clinical physiology and pathophysiology of the respiratory, cardiovascular, and neurologic systems , modes of therapy and their rationale, and psychosocial and ethical issues which arise therein. Under the close supervision of pediatric intensive care faculty , the student will perform assessments of the children in the ICU and assist in formulating their assessment and plan. In this way , they will learn the various methods of approaching the sick and injured child and their families. The student will be expected to give a weekly report on specific areas of interest and follow patients throughout the patients' stay in the ICU. If a procedure is required, the student may perform them at the discretion of the attending physician, under his or her direct supervision. Students are expected to attend any conferences or didactic lectures as instructed by the course director or department chair. ________________________________________________________________________________________________ Learning Objectives: 1. Use medical knowledge and clinical reasoning to form hypotheses related to patient problems in the intensive care unit and/or emergency setting. 2. Obtain an accurate and pertinent medical history from all appropriate available sources and record it in a complete, concise,and effective manner. 3. Perform, record, and verbally describe a comprehensive physical examination and review the physical findings with a resident or a faculty member. 4. Use the clinical laboratory, imaging studies, and other diagnostic testing in an appropriate and cost-effective manner and discuss the methods and limitations of common ly performed diagnostic tests. 5. Create accurate problem lists for assigned critically ill patients. 6. Apply critical reading skills in using the library and electronic resources to research the disease states encountered.
Where To Report
Students will receive an email with information on where and when to report.
Requirements
Students are expected to attend morning report/rounds daily. Students will take approximately every fourth night call including some weekend call. Students will work on weekends when they take call. Students will be expected to follow patients and formulate daily SOAP notes for their patients, which will be reviewed by the attending physician.
Evaluation
Pass/Fail. Students will be graded by all supervising fellows and attendings. They will be given a verbal mid-month evaluation and then a formal written evaluation at the end of the rotation. They will be graded on professionalism, scholarship, patient care, medical knowledge, interpersonal and communication skills, practice-based learning and system based practice.
