Course Description This course will provide overview of health/safety issues faced by Alabama farmers. Students will explore issues set forth in Requirements Section (below) 1-5 as follows: a) Seminar/discussion with course director (classroom and on-site) minimum of 8 hours. B) Review/discussion of text from Donham, K., & Thelin, A (2006) Agricultural Medicine: Occupational and Environmental Health for the Health Professions. Ames, Iowa; Blackwell Pub., copy of which is available for use during ST week. C) Farm tour accompanied by course director and local extension agent - minimum of 4 hours. D) Interview of farmer and review of health/safety hazards identified during tour. E) Interview of extension agent. Student should expect course seminars, farm visit/interviews to require 16-20 hour time commitment. Time needed for selected readings/written report will be dependent on individual student.

Requirements 1) Prior to course, student will consult with course director re: specific area of interest, field experience opportunities, week’s schedule including initial/final seminar, farm visit, and interaction with Extension Service. 2) Student will review and be prepared to discuss selected chapters from aforementioned text. 3) Student will participate in 1 farm visit re: health/safety concerns related to the farm, farm family & community. Suggested question: "If I were your local physician, what do you want me to know that will help me to better care for you and your family?" Student may choose type of farm and/or location. 4) Student will meet with local extension agent as available, exploring role of Extension Service and their resources. 5) Student will submit written report of activities, including summary of interviews.
