Course Description
This course is designed to help the student gain knowledge of preoperative evaluation and postoperative care pertaining to anesthesiology, to become familiar with various anesthetic agents and preoperative medications, learn intubation and airway management techniques. The essentials of sedative, analgesic, and anesthetic pharmacology will be taught. The student will gain an understanding of cardiorespiratory monitoring and the principles of mechanical ventilation. The following key topics will be addressed: interpretations of dysrhythmias and their correction, arterial blood gas analysis, fluid resuscitation and electrolyte imbalance, blood and blood product transfusion, management of hypovolemia and cardiogenic shock and cerebral protection.

Evaluation
Pass/Fail. The student will be evaluated on a subjective basis based upon the attending physician’s interview with the student and observations of the student’s performance.
