Course Description
Student will follow and observe UAB Interpreters as they provide translations between Spanish-speaking patients and physicians throughout many different services in the UAB Hospital system. Students will have the opportunity to see first- hand the barriers encountered between patients and physicians and hospital staff that speak different languages. Learning Objectives: 1) Observe the language barriers faced while providing care to Spanish-speaking patients. 2) Obtain a better understanding of the processes and efforts that go into providing translating services. 3) Obtain exposure to native Spanish-speakers and the manner in which medical issues are explained to them. 4) Foster culture awareness of the differences between patients from various Spanish-speaking countries and regions.

Requirements
500-700 word essay on what was observed and learned during week. Be present Mon-Fri: minimum - all assigned appointments (on-call optional).
Evaluation
Pass/Fail. Essay in Spanish.
