Course Description This course is designed for medical students who have completed their preclinical coursework and have an interest in pursuing a surgical residency. As surgeons and pathologists work together daily to accomplish diagnostic and therapeutic goals for patients, it is important for future surgery residents to be familiar with the principles of pathology. Assignments will be tailored to the enrolled students according to their specific interests. Options include any combination of participating in adult and pediatric autopsies, rotating in surgical pathology, observations in the frozen section room, touring the blood bank and coagulation laboratories, and exposure to the transfusion medicine service. Students are welcome to attend any of the weekly activities such as subspecialty sign-outs, provisional and final anatomic diagnoses, brain-cutting sessions, journal clubs, and anatomical and laboratory medicine conferences. Upon request, students may also spend a day at the Medical Examiner's office at Cooper Green. Emphasis will be placed on anatomic skills and dissection, principles of intra-operative frozen section diagnosis, the process of obtaining a final report for specimens and biopsies, indications for blood product use, and interpretation of special laboratory tests. Learning Objectives: Participation in this course will enhance the student's understanding of anatomy and dissection skills, inform him or her of the process of establishing a diagnosis on frozen section or permanent section, and enable effective and efficient use of blood products and laboratory tests. Afterwards, the student will be better prepared to utilize services provided by the department of pathology and work as a team with his or her pathology colleagues in patient care.
