Course Description
In the pediatric longitudinal community clerkship, students develop a long-term relationship with preceptors who facilitate clinical learning experiences throughout the year. Students spend time in the nursery, the inpatient medical/surgical ward, the emergency department, and outpatient pediatrics clinics. Students will learn basic principles of growth and development of children, common childhood illnesses, caring for children with chronic medical conditions, and injury prevention and treatment. Teaching directly by faculty attendings occurs in didactic sessions, at the hospital bedside, and in the outpatient clinic. Students have an opportunity to spend one week at the The Children's Hospital of Alabama in a Pediatric specialty clinic. Students experience a longitudinal relationship with pediatric patient populations which reinforces a comprehensive, continuity of care approach.
