Course Description
Camp Smile-A-Mile provides year-round challenging, unforgettable recreational and educational experiences for young cancer patients, their families, and young adult survivors. The week-long camp is for on-therapy and off-therapy patients ages 13 through 10th grade. UASOM students will serve as camp counselors, and must have already applied and been selected as counselors by the camp administration. While your specific role (cabin counselor, activity staff, medical team, etc.) at the camp will be determined in conjunction with the program director, everyone participating can expect to interact with the campers and help ensure a fun and safe environment. Food and lodging will be provided with no charge to the student. Learning Objectives: Students will gain an appreciation of challenges that on-therapy and off-therapy childhood cancer patients face on a daily basis through observation and interaction in a non-clinical setting. Students will learn strategies to effectively communicate with campers of different ages and teach lifelong skills.
Where To Report
For week-long camps, plan to arrive in the morning of the first scheduled day of camp; specific times will be provided by the program director. Actual camp dates vary each year; please visit http://www.smileamile.com/summer-camp-sessions/registration-information/ for current information.

To earn credit for the course, students must: 1)attend a required SOM orientation before the camp experience begins (this is in addition to whatever orientation the camp requires), 2) complete two written assignments over the course of the camp, and 3) attend a debriefing meeting in the fall once classes resume.
