Course Description
THIS COURSE OCCURS PERIODICALLY FROM AUGUST-MAY EACH YEAR. IT RECEIVES 4 WEEKS OF ELECTIVE CREDIT. Overview: This elective provides an opportunity for fourth year students to serve as mentors and teachers for first and second year students in the simulation activities of the first and second year medical curriculum. Simulation as a teaching technique is increasingly being used throughout the medical curriculum - in UME, GME and CME. This elective will provide MS4 students with an opportunity to be immersed in the simulation setting which will allow them to succeed in future simulation activity as both learners and teachers. MS4 Simulation Teaching Associates (STAs) will participate in several orientation sessions to include: 1) teaching with simulation 2) small group teaching 3) how to run a simulated teaching session 4) how to lead a simulation debriefing session 5) teaching teamwork. After orientation, MS4 STAs will work in pairs and have the opportunity to teach during 1st and 2nd year modules which integrate simulation-based sessions as both content experts and simulation specialists. Most of these teaching sessions will take place in the Volker Hall Simulation Center. Goals and Objectives: The goal of this elective is to develop students as teachers. Objectives include: 1) Use simulation as a teaching technique for preclinical learners. 2) Employ educational strategies to the appropriate rigor preclinical students' understanding of disease. 3) Explain clinical reasoning process and teach clinical reasoning skills in a simulation environment and small group setting. 4) Predict challenges and limitations of teaching and learning in a simulated environment 5) Explain the purpose of learning objectives within an educational scenario and connect simulation experiences with learning objectives. 6) Employ educational strategies to engage students in small groups and promote students' retention of knowledge in a small group. 7) Run simulations and effectively debrief 8) Understand and teach basic teamwork principles 9) Self-reflect on progression as teacher Elective Activities: 1. Orientation & Training Sessions: these session with the Director of Medical Students/Simulation and other faculty from the Office of lnterprofessional Simulation will cover expectations, available resources and tips for teaching in the simulation sessions. Students will receive training in debriefing with good judgement. Students will also receive training about teamwork training and implementation of the TeamSTEPPS curricular components within simulation sessions. 2. Training Sessions-- Before each planned set of simulation sessions, students will meet with the Director of Medical Student Simulation for simulation specific training. 3. Simulation teaching sessions -- STAs will be provided with a detailed teaching guide for each of the small group sessions. STAs will provide direct teaching for up to 9 - 2 hour simulation sessions in the preclinical modules. 4. Opportunities for self-reflection and improvement: MS4s will be provided with the opportunity to practice, refine, and reflect on their own skills as educatorsSince students will teach in pairs, feedback will be built in to pair teaching sessions. In addition, every attempt will be made to match student groups with STAs so that continuity of students can be provided and feedback can be given. Feedback will be sought from students about curriculum design and integration of simulation. Students may also participate in the development of additional simulation curriculum.

Completion offinal course evaluation participation:
-MS4 students are responsible for ensuring their participation in 8 simulation sessions to receive credit.
Evaluation
Pass/Fail. Attendance and completion of scheduled activities; evaluation of teaching by preclinical students. Students must meet ALL expectations provided during the elective orientation. Assessment of satisfactory completion will be by the course director or delegate.
