Course Description The goal of this course is to introduce the student to multi-disciplinary care of pediatric patients with congenital heart disease. This course will be very valuable to any student that is considering pursuing a career in any specialty focused on the treatment of cardiovascular disease. It will also be extremely valuable for students considering a career in any pediatric subspecialty but in particular students interested in pediatric critical care. During the rotation the student will work as an integral member of the multi-disciplinary team that includes physicians specializing in pediatric cardiac critical care, pediatric cardiology, pediatric cardiac anesthesia, in addition to the pediatric cardiac surgeons. The student will be expected to attend daily multi-disciplinary rounds in the CICU, pediatric cardiac catheterization conference on Friday mornings, cardiac surgical educational conferences on Monday afternoons, and the monthly morbidity and mortality conference. As part of the educational experience the student will present a journal article review at the monthly journal club. A faculty coach will mentor and facilitate their presentation. During the month there will also be opportunities to attend the cardiac simulation lab and to attend a demonstration of various congenital heart morphologists mentored by one of the pathologists. By the end of this rotation the student should: 1. Have a basic understanding of cardiac pathophysiology in congenital heart disease 2. Have seen and understand the cardiac pathological anatomy of the cases they are assigned to 3. Be able to know and why a diagnostic procedure is being performed and have a basic knowledge of how to interpret the results (e.g. echocardiography, cardiac CT angiography, and cardiac MRI) 4. Have developed a beginning knowledge of pediatric cardiac critical care (i.e. understand the difference between normal convalescence and complicated recovery after pediatric cardiac surgery) 5. Most importantly have gained an appreciation for the importance of multi-disciplinary care in the treatment of critically ill patients
