Prerequisites While completion of Medicine and Surgery Clerkships would be recommended, there are no required prerequisites for this course.

Course Description This is a selective course in Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery. It is a clinically based mentorship course with the student spending time with one or two faculty members. It will involve spending time in the clinic as well as the operating room. Students will be expected to participate in the operating room and develop technical skills such as proper use of operative instruments, suturing and tissue handling. The student will be primarily assigned to a single surgeon and shadow that individual in the care of patients on the floor, in the operating room and in the clinic setting. LEARNING OBJECTIVES: 1. Strengthen knowledge of the anatomy of the head and neck, trunk, extremities and skin. 2. Become familiar with the scope and extent of the specialty of Plastic Surgery. 3. Develop technical skills (ie-suturing, cutting, sterile technique). 4. Strengthen clinical skills such as examination and history taking.

Requirements Successful complete of MS1 and MS2 years.

READING: Prior to each case with emphasis on anatomy, physiology and pathology; additional reading as directed.
CONFERENCES: Tuesday at 4pm, 5pm and Thursday at 5pm in the FOT Office (LOV Library).
ROUNDS: Participate on rounds with the resident on service each morning prior to surgery.
CALL: Assigned to work with a senior resident approx once per week.
CLINIC: Student is expected to participate in clinic including performing H&P.
PRESENTATION: Near the end of the course the student will give a formal presentation at one of the plastic surgery conferences. Additional informal presentations may be assigned.
Evaluation Pass/Fail based on:
ATTENDANCE for clinical activities (surgery and clinics) and conferences
PRESENTATION at weekly plastic surgery conference
PARTICIPATION during clinic, rounds, surgery and conference
READING ASSIGNMENTS prior to surgical cases as directed by faculty member
