Course Description
The goal of this outpatient rotation is designed to provide a broad experience in care and treatment of patients with musculoskeletal disorders. The student will experience musculoskeletal medicine in outpatient settings where the focus is in the Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation multidisciplinary specialty clinics. Students will also have the opportunity to care for individuals with acute and chronic neuromusculoskeletal disorders such as musculoskeletal trauma, sports injuries, work-related injuries, repetitive stress injuries, arthritis, amputation, spinal cord injury, stroke, traumatic brain injury and beyond. Students will have the opportunity to observe procedures including joint injections, trigger point injections, EMG studies, botulinum toxin injections, ultrasound guided injections and fluoroscopically-guided spinal injections such as epidural blocks and facet injections. At the conclusion of the course, the student will be knowledgeable and able to: 1) Develop competence in basic neuro musculoskeletal exam 2) Formulate differential diagnosis for common musculoskeletal complaints 3) Develop basic treatment plans for common musculoskeletal syndromes 4) Develop an appreciation for magnitude of impact of musculoskeletal disorders on individual and public health 5) Understand basic approaches to diagnostic studies for musculoskeletal systems

Selected articles and book chapters will be distributed to students at the beginning of the course.
Evaluation
Pass/Fail based on:
1) Faculty observation of students history, physical exam skills, and knowledge
2) Ability to formulate differential diagnosis and develop basic treatment plan
