Course Description
This inpatient experience will introduce the medical students to Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation (PM&R). Medical students will develop basic understanding of the care of individuals with acute and chronic neuromusculoskeletal disorders such as musculoskeletal trauma, amputation, spinal cord injury, stroke, traumatic brain injury and beyond. Students will participate in acute management for inpatients, as well as are planning for individuals with long-term or permanent physical impairments. Students will become familiar with strategies to maximize functional recovery and adaptive techniques for life after injury or with chronic disability. This course will provide didactic and clinical experience in inpatient environments in the specialty of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation. Students will be introduced to the multidisciplinary teams which incorporate medical management, rehabilitation, use of adaptive equipment and environmental modification. They will become familiar with treatment for the impairments of mobility, gait, assistive devices, activities for daily living, along with the psychological aspects of illness or injury and other special issues such as vocation rehabilitation, cardiopulmonary rehabilitation, and low vision rehabilitation. OBJECTIVES: (1) Develop understanding of the spectrum of illness and injury which affect function (2) Learn to identify patients' rehabilitation needs (3) Acquire understanding of the rehab team concept and treatment strategies to maximize functional outcomes (4) Develop insight into health care providers' emotional reactions to persons with severe physical disability. The student will have exposure to spinal cord injury, stroke, traumatic brain injury, and neuroscience services. The student will make daily rounds with the attending physician and resident, do a history/physical on new admissions, and perform other tasks, as assigned by the attending physician.

Requirements
Expected to round with attending daily at designated time; no overnight call.
Evaluation
Faculty will provide immediate and direct feedback to the student concerning the history-taking, exam, formulation of diagnostic impressions and treatment plan.
