Course Description
An introduction to clinical rheumatology providing exposure to patients with a variety of rheumatic disorders in the outpatient and inpatient setting. Concepts learned in the MSS module will be further integrated with patient care activities. COURSE FORMAT: Students will be assigned to rheumatology continuity clinic venues 5 half days/week with 2-3 faculty members of the Division of Clinical Immunology and Rheumatology and faculty in Pediatric Rheumatology. Approximately 10 hrs/week will be spent rounding with the rheumatology inpatient consultation service. A core curriculum of tutorials by rheumatology faculty and technicians in the clinical immunology lab comprise the remainder of the experience. LEARNING OBJECTIVES: 1. Recognize the presentations of rheumatoid arthritis, seronegative spondyloarthropathies, and autoantibody mediated autoimmune disorders 2. Perform a comprehensive musculoskeletal examination 3. Recognize the surface anatomy of common regional musculoskeletal disorders 4. Understand the use of the clinical immunology lab in the diagnosis and assessment of autoimmune disorders 5. Understand the basis for the use of immunomodulating therapies in managing rheumatic and autoimmune disorders
Where To Report
Report to FOT bldg, Room 837 on the first day, unless otherwise noted per email to the student to report directly to the Clinic. Additional locations for the course include TKC or Whitaker Rheum. Clinic
Requirements
Student will be required to:
- Attend assigned clinics and rounds, scheduled tutorials and review of disease modules covered in MSS
- Read chapters in the Primer of Rheumatic Diseases relevant to patients encountered (copy provided to the student)
- Keep a log/portfolio of patients seen and prepare/present 10-15 min PowerPoint presentation of one case each week from the portfolio during weeks 2,3, and 4 (content guidelines will be provided to the student)
Evaluation
Pass/Fail based on:
- Attendance
- Assessment of relevant reading
- Musculoskeletal exam skills (25%)
- Weekly presentations (3) from portfolio to peers, residents on service, and faculty (25% each = 75%)
