Course Description The Diagnostic Radiology selective provides medical students an four-week introduction to the fundamentals of radiology, as well as exposure to the various modalities and procedures. Students will learn the role radiologic evaluation plays in patient care. The radiology selective course will provide a basic understanding of the radiological diagnostic principles that are essential to any physician practicing modern medicine. OBJECTIVES: (1) The selective will improve the student's ability to order the best radiological study to answer specific clinical questions (2) Instruction in basic interpretation concepts, including emergent findings on chest and abdominal radiographs, will be given to students to help them during their clerkships and into their internships (3) For students interested in radiology, the selective will provide early experience in radiology to assist in their future career decision.
Where To Report Jefferson Towers, Room N382. Information will be sent to the student prior to the first day of the course.
Requirements The student will participate daily on a radiology service. They will interact with residents, fellows, or attendings about the performance and interpretation of radiological studies. Attendance of lectures will be mandatory. The lectures cover a large range of topics specifically tailored to medical students. Students will also be required to attend the daily "noon conference" lectures. Electronic presentation of a radiology case and completion of a radiology test is required.
Note: Only four weekday absences are allowed for any reason.
Evaluation Pass/Fail.
The selective students will be assessed based upon individual participation, a written test during the final week of the course, and a powerpoint presentation of an educational radiologic case to the other students. Student assessment of the selective will be performed using the same process that elective students use for the elective rotations.
