Course Description The discipline of surgical pathology originally grew out of the need for surgeons not only to make accurate diagnoses, but also to stage their patients for various treatment modalities. It originally began as a subspecialty of surgery itself, however as it became apparent that intensive specialized training separate from surgery was required to perform accurate histological evaluations, the function of providing diagnostic patient information gradually shifted to departments of Pathology. Our selective will focus on the diagnostic methods in Surgical Pathology. Students will be attached to a senior pathologist and pathology resident during their time here. They will observe how specimens are received from the operating rooms. Students will follow these to "sign-out", i.e., the actual diagnostic process by which pathologists make diagnoses by reviewing the clinical histories and tissues of given patients. They will participate in the interactive process of diagnosis, be active partners in the relevant discussions, and attend all educational conferences in the section of surgical pathology during their selective time. They will also be engaged in the process of intraoperative consultation (frozen section diagnosis) for at least one day per week in order to observe the most important service interactions between surgeons and pathologists. Before leaving here, students will understand the usefulness of pathology in the care and management of living patients. They will be able to consider careers in a valuable area of medicine seldom considered by medical students. They will also gain valuable experience for other career paths from their time here. Attending pathologists and house staff will evaluate student performance subjectively; they will also be graded objectively by a brief shelf examination. Students will assess the Selective by filling in a short answer evaluation and by writing a short narrative of what they enjoyed and what they would improve about their experience.
