Course Description The Rural Medicine Selective provides experiences in the office of a practicing family physician, internal medicine physician or pediatrician located in a rural area. The student will participate in out-patient and in-patient care and will experience the practice management aspects of a rural community physician. This course is offered as a means of introducing the student to the practices of physicians in rural Alabama settings. While on this rotation, the student will be given the opportunity not only to observe the preceptor's role in the community, but also to investigate and understand several specific issues as they relate to rural medical practices. This rotation is one in which the student lives (if possible) and participates in a rural medical community, becoming as much as possible, a member of the health care team. While in the assigned community, the student's housing will be provided, if possible, either in the physician's home, in the hospital, or in some other suitable site. During this rotation, the student will not only have an opportunity to participate in direct patient care, but will also serve as a role model to high school and college students in the community who might consider medicine as a career.
Where To Report Preceptor's Office. This can be done with any of our Family Medicine or Rural Medicine preceptors except those in Birmingham, Mobile, Huntsville, Montgomery, Tuscaloosa, and Auburn.
Requirements Attendance at clinics and other course activities as determined by the supervising faculty, completion of a short project of interest, and a written summary of the experience.
Evaluation Pass/Fail.
Final review will be performed by the supervising faculty and will include input by other faculty dependent upon actual time spent with those individuals. Students are allowed time to complete a written summary of the experience and a short community project of interest. Completion of the UASOM clerkship evaluation form may be necessary to communicate strengths and any problems encountered.
