Course Description
The focus of this course is to assist students with the development of skills and knowledge necessary in the assessment and treatment of the acutely ill or injured patient. Students will work 12 clinical shifts in the department alongside an attending and a resident. This opportunity will expose students to common complaints seen in the emergency department. While in the department, you will have an active role and will likely be the first person in the room to assess the patient. During the rotation, you will be able to practice obtaining a focused history and physical exam as well as practice your patient presentations. Throughout the rotation you will be able to advance your assessment of a patient's chief complaint and begin developing your own treatment plan and patient disposition. You should have the opportunity to observe, assist, and perform common ER procedures such as: peripheral IVs, central venous lines, arterial lines, lumbar punctures, tube thoracostomy, intubations, among others. Outside of clinical work, you will have a protected and dedicated didactic schedule. Orientation will be held during the first day of the rotation and is mandatory. In addition to clinical shifts, students will compete a case presentation on an interesting patient you had during the rotation (previous examples can be provided). Frequently, students have been able to get their cases published or accepted to a conference for presentation (limited funds may be available for publication fees and travel). This rotation will be an excellent opportunity, for someone early in their medical training, to become exposed to the emergency medicine specialty. By the end of the rotation, you should feel comfortable obtaining a focused history and physical as well as developing your own treatment strategies. Should you choose to do emergency medicine as a career, this rotation will introduce you to mentors who will be able to guide you with strategies necessary to help you be successful in the match.

Requirements
AShifts: approximately 13 shifts per 4-week block. A mixture of day, evening, night shifts will be required.
Attendance: orientation on the first day of the rotation; weekly lectures and simulation labs; at the beginning of shifts, throughout the shifts, and at end of shifts through check-out.
Evaluation
Pass/Fail.
Brief End-of-shift evaluations at the end of each shift worked. These are completed by the senior resident or attending that the student worked with during that shift.
End-of-rotation evaluation completed by the course director based on the End-of-shift evaluations and direct observation.
Notes
Week 1
Suture lab following orientation
3 to 4 hours of dedicated introduction to EM lectures
Week 2
2 to 3 hours of MS3 sim (2 cases)
Week 3
2-3 hours of MS3 dedicated ultrasound in the department
Week 4
Case presentations, each student develops and presents 30 min case to their 3rd year peers as well as the clerkship director
