Course Description During this four-week selective, it is our intention to provide instruction in Airway Management and Acute Pain Management. GOALS: Each student attending this selective shall acquire basic airway establishment and management skills. They shall also acquire a basic understanding of acute pain management. OBJECTIVES: (1) Through both didactic and hands-on experience, each student will learn to establish and maintain an airway in the controlled and supervised environment of the operating room. Advanced airway control procedures will be introduced as the surgical schedule allows. (2) Through didactic and clinical venues of the acute pain service, each student will acquire a basic understanding of pain management: What is pain? What are the different types of pain? How are they diagnosed? How are they perceived? How are they transmitted? How can they be treated? DESCRIPTION OF THE EXPERIENCE: Medical students need to know how to establish and maintain an airway. Without this learned skill, proceeding with the "A,B,C's of resuscitation" is fruitless. We can teach these life saving skills in a very controlled, supervised environment with faculty and residents who perform these procedures hundreds of times yearly. JCAHO has established pain management as the "fifth vital sign" and requires documentation attesting to physicians' training in this area. The Department of Anesthesiology is uniquely qualified to teach pain management to medical students, through our Acute Pain Management Service. Students will receive both didactic and clinical exposure to the various means currently available for acute pain management. Airway management will be eight days ( Mon-Fri then Mon-Wed for the OR), and Acute Pain Control will be seven days( Thur-Fri then Mon -Fri). Dr Pankaj Desai, Dir. Acute Pain Service would like to reserve the ability to have the students come in on a Saturday morning for pain rounds as they have a much more relaxed schedule and do a great deal of teaching on the weekend rounds. The goal is to have the students demonstrate airway control, then move to pain management consultations. This will be done on a separate day. Students will be split between the 2 objectives (2 on airway and 2 on consults). There will be a minimum of two pain consultations each day. Should there be no consultations on a particular day, the students will stay with the resident/pain fellow as they place blocks for the OR and make their twice-daily rounds. Students can additionally have the opportunity to spend a day in a chosen subspecialty as available (IPS, CV, or OB).
Where To Report You will be contacted prior to start date regarding information on when and where to report for orientation.
Requirements Successful completion of MS1 and MS2 years.
Evaluation EVALUATION: Students will be assigned to weekly preceptors consisting of residents, and occasionally faculty. Students will be judged on knowledge, attitude, ability, technical skills, and progress; these will be documented on a standardized evaluation form. Conference attendance will be recorded. The preceptor evaluations, attendance records, and results of a written examination will be utilized for letters of recommendation, ranking for the McGahey Award in Anesthesiology (cash award) presented at the Honor's Convocation, and as the basis for a pass or fail grade.
