Course Description
The course will consist of one week in an international medically underserved area. The students will travel with a medical team to the Dominican Republic to attend to the underserved and impoverished in a medical clinic. Students will also spend time at a local orphanage learning how to evaluate and treat simple illnesses in a third world environment. Learning Objective: The student will gain experience in diagnosing medical illnesses and the challenges of treatment in a 3rd world country; the use of medical Spanish in attending patients; the role and impact of lay health education; and examining healthcare disparities in an underserved setting.

Students will be notified. Flight and housing will be arranged.
Requirements
Direct observation by preceptor and participation in all activities and discussions with preceptors. The final grade will be based on participation, an oral presentation and a written paper on a relevant clinical topic encountered during the course.
Evaluation
Pass/Fail; presentation, written paper, and class participation/attendance.
