Course Description
This course aims to foster clinicians' professional ability (1) to conduct evidence-based, realistic, yet humanistic analyses of ethical dilemmas they may encounter in clinical settings, (2) to make difficult decisions based on solid ethical reasoning, and (3) to effectively communicate their perspectives to patients, families, and colleagues while carefully listening to everyone's views and values. Each session consists of three parts: i. Ethics M&M: A case analysis using a famous "4 boxes" approach and traditional-ethical theory-based approaches (Kantian, Utilitarian and Psychology-based approaches) ii. A discussion on relevant laws and regulations iii. A "hidden curriculum" forum: a discussion of positive/negative/ambivalent influences one has had through clerkship experiences Topics include: respecting autonomy and determining patient's capacity to share in decision making, treatment refusal, privacy and confidentiality, end-of-life decisions and advance care planning, surrogate decisions, DNR orders, futile care, maternal and neonatal issues, truth-telling and disclosure. All cases discussed will be real cases recently reported or documented.
