Course Description Prescribing Art: How Observation Enhances Medicine explores the relationship between observation and diagnosis by exposing students to works of fine art to teach critical skills of observation. This updated course will use works of art to highlight observation in medical settings, understand biases in medicine, and learn about tolerance of ambiguity. Taking place in the galleries around Birmingham and taught by art educators and medical educators, Prescribing Art aims to improve skills of observation, description and interpretation. At the end of the course, students will have an improved appreciation for art, and in so doing, an improved skills set for clinical diagnosis.
Where To Report The first session is on the Monday of the ST week. The final session is on Friday. In-person gallery time will take place at the Birmingham Museum of Art, UAB’s AEIVA museum, and the Birmingham Civil Rights Institute.
Requirements 1. In-person participation for all offered sessions; 2. Willingness to read articles before class, discuss new concepts, share new ideas, and (if remote learning is mandated by the pandemic) to keep video on during remote sessions; 3. Participation in all offered sessions; and 4. Critical evaluation and feedback of the course structure and requirements.
Evaluation Pass/Fail based on class attendance and participation in group assignments.
Notes Note: students participating in the course will be expected to attend the in-person small group sessions in Birmingham.
