Course Description

There is a strong emphasis on the team approach with the physician serving as the team leader communication serving as the vital link between team members including nurses, physical and occupational therapists, speech/language pathologists, neuropsychologists, counselors, nutritionists, social workers, and most importantly the patient and patient's family. The student will be assigned on a short-term rotation basis to one or more staff physicians on an inpatient and/or outpatient service, depending upon how the course is taken. The student will be allowed to concentrate in a particular area of interest (spinal cord injury, stroke, brain injury, cerebral palsy, etc.). The student will make daily rounds with the attending physician and resident on the inpatient and consult service prior to starting outpatient clinic duties for the entire month or a portion of the month, depending upon how the course is taken.
