Course Description
This elective rotation has been designed as a good experience for the student who is considering a career in Anesthesiology. Each student will be assigned to an anesthesia resident for the duration of the rotation. The student will participate in all areas of patient care under the continuous supervision of this resident, and if applicable, their assigned attending. During the rotation, a reasonable degree of proficiency in technical skills should be acquired including airway management, mask ventilation, endotracheal intubation and bronchoscopy. There will be opportunities for observing and performing invasive monitoring and regional anesthetic techniques. The essentials of sedative, analgesic and anesthetic pharmacology will be taught. The student will learn the fundamentals of cardio respiratory monitoring and the principles of mechanical ventilation. Students are only allowed to miss 2 days during this 4 week rotation. If a student anticipates missing more than 2 days during this rotation, they must get prior approval from the course contact and medical student director. If prior approval is not obtained, the student's final grade could be impacted in a negative way up to a Fail from the rotation.
Where To Report
You will be contacted with reporting instructions for orientation prior to the first day of rotation. Please come dressed in scrubs.
Requirements
Medical students will be required to attend all didactic activities in the Dept of Anesthesiology at UAB. Every Monday, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday; students will be asked to attend VA morning case conference. The conference starts promptly at 6:45 AM and finishes at 7:05 AM. Medical students will have their own lecture schedule which will be published and given to them in advance.
Evaluation
Evaluation is Pass/Fail. Students will be assigned to weekly preceptors consisting of residents and occasionally faculty. Students will be judged on knowledge, attitude, ability, technical skills and progress; these will be documented on a standardized evaluation form. Conference attendance will be recorded. The preceptor evaluations, attendance records and results of written examination will be utilized for letters of recommendation, ranking for the McGahey Award in Anesthesiology (cash award) presented at the Honor's Convocation and as the basis for a pass or fail grade.
