Prerequisites Successful completion of the core Internal Medicine, OB/GYN and Surgery clerkships and any clerkship which covers the content material of the requested elective or acting internship course (e.g. Pediatric Clerkship must be successfully completed prior to taking a Pediatric Elective or AI).

Course Description This course is designed for the senior student who has completed the core clerkships in Obstetrics & Gynecology, Medicine, and Surgery who desires a more in-depth exposure to patients experiencing urinary and/or fecal incontinence and defects in pelvic support. The student will participate in the outpatient evaluation of patients with incontinence including detailed history and physical examination, appropriate testing for all types of urinary incontinence (stress, urge, fistula, etc) and testing of patients with anal incontinence and defecatory dysfunction. Due to the advanced age of many of the patients who suffer from incontinence, the student will encounter issues pertaining to a geriatric population. The student will have the opportunity to assist in surgery, whenever possible, and take an active role in postoperative inpatient care. Attending physicians will expect the student to promptly attend to rounds at the direction of residents and fellows as well as assigned clinics and surgeries. The student will be expected to create and present a discussion on a relevant topic in Urogynecology,to be presented towards the end of the AI rotation on a topic to be determined COURSE FORMAT: 1. Daily teaching rounds 2. Formal teaching conferences (Tuesday AM 0700) 3. Formal pre-operative conferences (Thursday PM 1630) 4. Outpatient clinics including evaluation and testing of patients with incontinence, pelvic floor disorders, and other geriatric issues 5. Surgeries and post-op care LEARNING OBJECTIVES: 1. Know the different types of urinary incontinence, the evaluation and current therapy for each including conservative and non-surgical intervention. 2. Be familiar with the evaluation and staging of pelvic organ prolapse and therapy, both surgical and conservative. 3. Know the current evaluation and treatment for patients with fecal incontinence and defecatory dysfunction.

Requirements Students are expected to be present for and participate in daily rounds, assigned clinics each day Mon-Fri and rounds one weekend day per week. Outside reading is strongly encouraged.
