Course Description The goal of this AI is to further refine Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation (PM&R) skills in both an inpatient and outpatient setting. In the outpatient setting the student will gain skills in the evaluation of the musculoskeletal system including advanced physical exam skills, ordering appropriate diagnostic studies, basic interpretation of radiographs and electrophysiologic studies. Students will also have the opportunity to care for individuals with acute and chronic neuromusculoskeletal disorders such as musculoskeletal trauma, sports injuries, work-related injuries, repetitive stress injuries, arthritis, amputation, spinal cord injury, stroke, traumatic brain injury and beyond. Students will learn to function independently in clinic under the direct supervision of a board-certified physiatrist (PM&R specialist). Students will have the opportunity to observe procedures including joint injections, trigger point injections, EMG studies, and fluoroscopically-guided spinal injections such as epidural blocks and facet injections. The student will also be exposed to the inpatient services focusing on spinal cord injury, stroke, traumatic brain injury and/or neuroscience diagnoses. The student will make daily rounds with the attending physician and resident, do a history/physical on new admissions, and perform other tasks, as assigned by the attending physician. During this rotation, students will be required to complete a 10-minute case presentation related to a patient encounter.
