Course Description
Recent medical literature gives growing evidence that clinician interpersonal relationships may play an important role in varying health outcomes and health disparities in specific ethnic / racial populations. This special topics course is designed to increase the medical student's knowledge of this growing literature as well as provide short immersion activities which increase their own knowledge, attitudes, and skills in becoming more culturally competent as a health care practitioner. The course leader has had some experience with this area through the conduction of cultural competency training and workshop presentations, as well as community-based participatory research-training around partnering of academic institutions with underserved minority communities. The course leader will also rely on a variety of community partnerships through her affiliation with the University of Alabama Rural Health Institute for Clinical and Translational Science, and other partners such as the Alabama Department of Public Health - Office of Minority Health, The Alabama Alliance for Latino Health, the University of Alabama at Birmingham Minority Research Health Center and the Black Belt Community Foundation for additional support for the short immersion experiences. OBJECTIVE: The course is designed to increase the medical student's knowledge of this growing literature as well as provide short immersion activities which increase their own knowledge, attitudes, and skills in becoming more culturally competent as a health care practitioner. - Review of literature of cultural competency issues in health and health care in the United States and Alabama - Self examination exercises of one's bias, stereotypes and prejeduices in one's own upbringing and experiences - in-dept examination of culture of a selected ethnic/racial group in Alabama including some limited immersion expereinces (i.e. site visits, meetings, interviews, etc.) - Final short paper (5 typed pages) of one aspect of course activities of student's choice (i.e. literature review, self examination exercise, examination of select eithnic/racial group in Alabama
