Course Description
During this introductory course, students will be introduced to the profession of medicine through a focus on the general competencies beyond patient care and medical knowledge; namely practice-based learning and improvement, interpersonal and communication skills, professionalism, and systems-based practice. Through large group and small group discussions and interactive projects, students will explore a wide variety of topics including professionalism, the ethical principles by which medicine operates, the historical aspects of medicine, the principle of scientific evidence as the basis for medical decision making, current issues in medicine such as health care finance, as well as the role of communication with patients as the core of the Patient Doctor relationship.
