Course Description In this inpatient rotation, the student is provided experience in how to assist individuals who have permanent impairments (paralysis, sensory loss, cognitive dysfunction, alteration of consciousness, decreased endurance, etc.) in identifying their remaining abilities and developing them to their maximum potential. There is a strong emphasis on the team approach, with communication as the vital link between team members, most importantly the patient and the patient's family. Goals of this course are for the student to: (1) apply the principles learned in anatomy, physiology, and kinesiology to individuals with neurological and musculoskeletal disorders, (2) participate in the 'team concept' of patient care, (3) learn what to expect from and how to work with many allied health practitioners (physical therapist, occupational therapist, speech therapist, psychologist, social worker, and vocational counselor), (4) learn to deal with patients whose goal is not 'cure' but learning to live with a residual disability, (5) learn how to identify during the acute care phase patients who have potential for functional improvement and should be referred for rehabilitation rather than sent home or to a nursing home, (6) understand and be comfortable with his/her own emotional reaction to a person with a severe physical disability, (7) improve skills in neurological and musculoskeletal examination, including gait analysis, muscle testing, range of motion and disability determination, (8) learn how to prevent many of the complications of disability and prolonged bed rest, and (9) become familiar with some of the governmental agencies and economic resources available to disabled individuals. The student will be assigned on a short-term rotation basis to one or more staff physicians on an inpatient service. The student will have exposure to spinal cord injury, stroke, traumatic brain injury, and neuroscience services. The student will make daily rounds with the attending physician and resident, do a history/physical on new admissions, and perform other tasks, as assigned by the attending physician. During this rotation, students will be required to complete a 10-minute case presentation related to a patient encounter.
