Course Description
The goal of this course is to give the senior level student an intensive experience in the diagnosis and management of hematologic and oncologic disease in the hospital setting. The goal is also to simulate what it might be like to be in private practice as a hematologist/oncologist, including taking call, inpatient prerounding and rounding, observing and performing procedures as appropriate, and occasionally doing some office visits. The student should also gain a fundamental understanding of the pathogenesis of malignancies during the month as well. The student will work closely with one private heme/onc physician for the majority of the month. The student will be involved in the continued care of patients with acute and chronic hematologic and oncologic problems, as well as those who are requiring consults. The student should learn the essentials of hematology/oncology during this month, with special emphasis on acute and chronic disease processes including the diagnosis and treatment of anemias, pancytopenia, leukopenias, thrombocytopenias, leukemias, lymphomas, and solid tumors. End of life issues and palliative care will arise and be addressed on this rotation as well. Chemotherapeutic agents and immune stimulant pharmacology should also be learned more in depth on this rotation. The student will be inherently exposed to a large number of procedures during this rotation, such as bone marrow biopsies and CT-guided biopsies. The student may be able to participate in some of these procedures if felt to be appropriate and ready by the attending physician.
Where To Report
Students will be e-mailed with information about where and when to report.
Requirements
The student will be expected to be responsible for at least 5-6 inpatients on average at all times including their daily progress notes, however they will observe significantly more patients than that on daily rounds with the attending heme/onc specialist. These inpatients may be admitted to the preceptor or seen in consultation by the preceptor. Other tasks and learning experiences will be determined as the situation arises and on an individual basis. Work days will be Monday through Friday every week.
Evaluation
The student will be evaluated by the attending physician based upon the attending physician's observations of the student's performance, though process and interest level. They will be judged on knowledge, attitude, ability, level of documentation, communication skills, level of progression, attendance, and timeliness. The rotation is pass or fail. The preceptor should give written/verbal feedback to the student approximately halfway through the course and the student should feel free to ask for feedback more frequently
