Course Description The student will experience the same type of diabetic instruction that a newly diagnosed diabetic would be expected to learn. This will include, but not be limited to, the following topics: diet, exercise, medications (oral therapy and insulin injections) and their side effects, complications, sick day treatment, and preventative issues. They will observe and participate in both group and individual teaching sessions in both an out-patient and an inpatient setting. They will learn more about the treatment of both type I and type II diabetes mellitus as well as gestational diabetes. During this week, the student will be inherently exposed to some of the economic, social, financial, and medical difficulties of diabetes that real patients face.
Where To Report Student will be e-mailed when and where to report.
Requirements Monday: Attendance at the outpatient Diabetes Control Center, 8 am to 4 pm. The student will observe children and adults with type I & II diabetes undergoing diabetic training. This may include a new insulin pump patient. They will also learn about carbohydrate counting.

Tuesday: Diabetes education class 8:30 am to 3:30 pm at Huntsville Hospital Medical Mall.

Wednesday: Personal assessment and teaching of inpatients at Huntsville Hospital from 8 am to 4 pm.

Thursday: Same place/ time as Monday. Likely involved in the follow-up of an insulin pump patient. Student will experience (if they agree to) what it?s like for insulin injection patients. This will involve checking one?s blood sugar, carb counting and self administration of a subcutaneous dose of saline instead of insulin after calculating the correct dose.

Friday: Gestational diabetes class 8:30 am to 12 noon at the Diabetes Control Center. From 1-4 p.m. at the hospital working with a C.D.E. in interviewing and counseling patients.
Evaluation The student will be evaluated by attending Certified Diabetes Educator(s) based on observations of the student?s performance and thought process and interest level. They will be judged on knowledge, attitude, ability, level of documentation, communication skills, level of progression, attendance, and timeliness. The rotation is graded pass or fail.
