Course Description Maternal-fetal medicine is a dynamic subspecialty within the field of obstetrics & gynecology which focuses on both the medical care of the pregnant mother and developing fetus. Underlying maternal disease can adversely affect pregnancy and vice versa, pregnancy itself can affect maternal disease. An array of fetal conditions, including genetic abnormalities, fetal anomalies, infections, and immunologic complications, can also complicate pregnancy often resulting in challenging clinical situations. This elective has been designed to highlight the diversity and challenging nature of the subspecialty of maternal-fetal medicine. The rotation will take place primarily in the hospital setting with several representative outpatient experiences. Course participants will become an integral part of the team responsible for the UAB antepartum maternal-fetal medicine service. Students will work directly with a senior level residents and MFM attendings in preparation for daily rounds and patient presentations. Students will be assigned several selected antepartum patients to be responsible for during the week rotation to provide development of patient evaluation/management skills and for continuity of care. Students will be responsible for the daily evaluation, presentation, and development of management plans (with resident and faculty guidance) for these patients. The rotation will be accentuated through student participation in several representative high risk pregnancy outpatient clinic experiences (Maternal-fetal medicine clinic, Obstetric complications clinic, Anomalies ultrasound clinic, Prenatal genetics clinic). Through these experiences, students will gain insights into the use of perinatal ultrasound diagnostics, genetic evaluation and consultation, and outpatient management of the high risk pregnancy. Optional night call will be available to interested individuals. For consideration for honors credit, participants will be required to prepare and present a lecture on a relevant clinical topic selected by the student/course preceptor. The lecture will be given on the final day of the rotation to the antepartum service team which consists of several attending faculty, resident house staff, and medical students. At the completion of the elective, the student will have developed an appreciation for the diverse nature of the subspecialty of maternal-fetal medicine.
