Prerequisites
Successful completion of the core internal medicine and surgery clerkships and any clerkship which covers the content material of the requested elective or acting internship course (e.g. Pediatric Clerkship must be successfully completed prior to taking a Pediatric Elective or AI).

Course Description
The student learns the essentials of anesthesiology with special emphasis on those aspects of the specialty which pertain to basic and advanced life support, integrating basic science knowledge with clinical applications.The student will gain an understanding of local anesthetic pharmacology and the use of those agents in spinal, epidural and plexus anesthesia. The following key topics will be addressed: interpretations of dysrhythmias and their correction; arterial blood gas analysis, fluid resuscitation and electrolyte imbalance, blood and blood product transfusion, management of hypovolemia and cardiogenic shock and cerebral protection.

Requirements
A reasonable degree of proficiency in technical skills should be acquired including airway management, mask ventilation, endotracheal intubation, venous access and nasogastric tube placement. In addition, the student will be introduced to cricothyroidotomy, jet ventilation, fiberoptic intubation and bronchoscopy.
Evaluation
Evaluation Methods: Pass/Fall
Students will be evaluated on attendance, completion of assigned reading and
participation in patient interactions and group discussions.
