Prerequisites * * * WRITTEN APPROVAL REQUIRED * * * Successful completion of the core internal medicine, family medicine and surgery clerkships and any clerkship which covers the content material of the requested elective or acting internship course (e.g. Pediatric Clerkship must be successfully completed prior to taking a Pediatric Elective or AI).

Course Description The Family Medicine Elective is a two or four-week experience, typically taken during the fourth year of medical school at the UASOM. All students, regardless of future specialty, will benefit from the way in which the elective builds upon concepts of integrated clinical medicine and broader aspects of patients lives first encountered in the third year clerkship. Additionally, the student interested in Family Medicine as a career will gain valuable clinical and educational experience, and will provide a solid base upon which to build a future in residency training and practice.

Requirements Attendance and participation is expected. Self-motivated reading is a must.

The rotation consists of morning hospital rounds on the inpatient service, and in afternoon clinic at University Medical Center. A modest amount of call is typically requested.
Evaluation The course is Pass / Fail and is for elective credit. Students from medical schools other than UASOM will be graded according to the stipulations of their sponsoring school.

The student will be expected to exhibit competence in performing a thorough history and physical assessment and the development of a treatment plan. The student will also be shown the appropriate use of consultations and referrals to other members of the health team.

The various preceptor's complete evaluations as they come into contact with the student, and are expected to provide appropriate feedback. The Clerkship Director reviews all final evaluations.
