Course Description This is a busy, hands-on rotation in which the student will have an active role in patient care. Except for seriously or critically ill patients, the student will likely be the first person of the medical team to evaluate his or her patients. The student will then present the patient to the attending. A plan of care and differential diagnosis will then be discussed. The student is expected to reassess the patient for response to therapies and follow up on labs and imaging. The EM attending will assist the student with these tasks. An appropriate disposition for the patient will then be determined through discussion with the attending. The student will also have the opportunity to participate in the care of seriously or critically ill patients in the emergency department. By the end of the rotation, the student should have seen a wide variety of patients. The medical problems the student may encounter on this rotation are basically limitless. The student should see a variety of medical, surgical, and trauma patients. Students will also be able to perform a variety of procedures during this rotation. Possible procedures to be performed by the student while being supervised by the attending include suturing, incision and drainage of abscess, foley catheters, nasogastric tubes, lumbar punctures, ultrasounds, Ivs, and arterial blood gas sampling. At the end of the rotation the student should be able to develop a basic differential list for common ED complaints, basic EKG and X-ray interpretation, and treatment/management of common ED diagnoses.
Where To Report Preceptor and scheduling information will be provided after course is scheduled.
Requirements Students who take this course as an Ambulatory AI will be required to work a minimum of 16 shifts including nights and weekends. A minimum of 12 shifts is required for those who take this course as a four week Elective and a minimum of 6 shifts is required for a two week Elective.

The student will work in the Huntsville Hospital Emergency Department under the supervision and guidance of an ER physician on a one-to-one basis. The degree of responsibility given to the student will vary depending on the student's interests, abilities and level of training, and the student will be expected to diagnose and treat the patients within the student's limitations.
Evaluation The student will be evaluated on a subjective basis based upon the attending physician's interview with the student and observations of the student's performance.
