Course Description
The goal of this course is to give the senior level student an intensive experience in the diagnosis and management of hematologic and oncologic disease in the hospital setting. The goal is also to simulate what it might be like to be in private practice as a hematologist/oncologist, including inpatient prerounding and rounding, observing and performing procedures as appropriate, and some office visits. The student should also gain a fundamental understanding of the pathogenesis of malignancies during the month as well. The student will work closely with one private heme/onc physician for the majority of the month. The student will be involved in the continued care of patients with acute and chronic hematologic and oncologic problems, as well as those who are requiring consults. The student should learn the essentials of heme/onc during this month, with special emphasis on acute and chronic disease processes including the diagnosis and treatment of anemias, pancytopenia, leukopenias, thrombocytopenias, leukemias, lymphomas, and solid tumors. End of life issues and palliative care will arise and be addressed on this rotation as well. Chemotherapeutic agents and immune stimulant pharmacology should also be learned more in depth on this rotation. The student will be inherently exposed to procedures during this rotation, such as bone marrow biopsies and CT-guided biopsies.
