Course Description Excellent exposure to trauma and critical care on surgical patients requiring this type of subspecialized care.This clinical experience is designed to provide the student with more extensive exposure in the management of patients with trauma, and those requiring surgical critical care. Clinical aspects include the initial evaluation, assessment, resuscitation and definitive care of trauma patients, plus surgical critical patient monitoring and physiologic support. The student serves as an acting intern and directly participates in patient care under the supervision of faculty. Trauma night call on a routine basis is preferred. This course is geared toward the student interested in general surgery or surgical subspecialty residency training.

Requirements On call schedule is variable. Proficiency in basic general surgical principles is expected. The student may be able to assist on major surgeries and perform some surgical procedures under the direct supervision of the attending surgeon.
Evaluation The evaluation will be based upon the attending physician's observations of the student's performance, thought process and interest level. Students will be judged on knowledge, attitude, ability, level of documentation, communication skills, level of progression, attendance, and timeliness
