Course Description In this course, the student will experience various aspects of sports medicine as it is practiced by a family physician with added qualifications in sports medicine and by orthopedic surgeons. In the process, the student will: (1) evaluate injuries that occur through participation in various sports, (2) interpret different imaging techniques in the evaluation of sports injuries, (3) develop an understanding of the principles of physical therapy and rehabilitation in the treatment of sports injuries, (4) participate with the preceptor as a team physician and understand the role and responsibilities thereof, (5) develop proficiency in taping, casting, and splinting, (6) participate in a program to promote sports injury prevention and/or a program of exercise in health promotion, (7) develop an understanding of the components of pre-participation evaluation, and (8) develop skill in evaluating physical fitness. It includes didactic sessions on common sports injuries, medical aspects of sport and exercise, and exercise physiology. A multi-disciplinary approach is employed in the rehabilitation of sports injuries and assessment of athletic performance. It will also provide time in the training room at two local universities and on-field experience at local athletic events with team physicians.

Requirements Monday-Friday mornings at The Orthopedic Center (TOC).
Evaluation The student will be evaluated on a subjective basis based upon the attending physician's interview with the student and observations of the student's performance.
