Prerequisites Successful completion of the core Internal Medicine and Surgery clerkships and any clerkship which covers the content material of the requested elective or acting internship course (e.g. Pediatric Clerkship must be successfully completed prior to taking a Pediatric Elective or AI).

Course Description The goal of this course is to give the student inpatient and outpatient experience in pulmonary/critical care medicine by experiencing the management of critical care illnesses in the hospital setting and chronic pulmonary diseases such as asthma, COPD, sleep apnea, and pulmonary fibrosis in the outpatient setting. Special emphasis placed on the following: acute and chronic respiratory failure, COPD, asthma, interstitial lung diseases, pulmonary hypertension, pulmonary thromboembolism, ventilator management, pneumothorax, treatment of all types of shock/SIRS, general intensive care medicine, interpretation of arterial and mixed venous blood gases, and interpretation of pulmonary function tests.

Requirements The student is expected to be responsible for at least 5-6 (on average) patients on the inpatient service at all times including their daily progress notes and to observe significantly more patients than that on daily rounds with attending physician. The student is expected to participate in the primary evaluation of at least 2 admissions or consults each day on average. On selected afternoons, the student is expected to see patients in the office, perform a brief and targeted history and exam, and present their findings to the faculty preceptor.

STUDENTS TAKING THIS COURSE AS AN AI WILL HAVE ON-CALL DUTIES. STUDENTS TAKING THIS COURSE AS AN ELECTIVE WILL NOT HAVE CALL DUTIES.
Evaluation A grade of Pass/Fail will be given to the student by the attending physician based upon observation of performance, thought process, and interest level. The student will be judged on knowledge, attitude, ability, level of documentation, communication skills, attendance, level of progression, and timeliness.
