Course Description
In this rotation, the fourth-year medical student will be an active team member caring for patients on one of the Internal Medicine inpatient teams. As an acting intern, the student is expected to take on increased responsibility, being involved in all aspects of their patients' care with close supervision by the upper level resident and attending. This rotation is an opportunity for the student to prepare for residency including time-management skills and building upon the medical knowledge and skills learned as a third-year student. Students will hone their clinical skills in history-taking and physical examination for a wide variety of medical conditions, and their communication skills through oral presentations and written documentation of Admission Notes and Daily Progress Notes for their patients in the electronic medical record. Students will expand their abilities to generate a comprehensive differential diagnosis, formulate an appropriate assessment and plan, and interpret clinical data to provide high-quality and compassionate care to their patients. Acting interns will enter draft orders for their patients in Cerner to be reviewed and signed by the upper level resident, which will enable them to deepen their understanding of specific diagnostic tests and management strategies of various disease states. Students will actively participate in daily teaching rounds, Morning Report, and resident didactic conferences.
