Course Description
The goal of this course is to give the senior level student an intensive experience in the diagnosis and management of renal disease, fluid and electrolyte disturbances, and hypertension in the hospital setting. The goal is also to simulate what it might be like to be in private practice as a nephrologist, including taking call, inpatient prerounding and rounding, observing procedures and performing procedures as appropriate, and occasionally doing some office visits. The student will work closely with one private nephrologist for the majority of the month. The student will be involved in the continued care of patients with acute and chronic renal problems, fluid and electrolyte disturbances, acid-base disturbances and hypertension. They will learn the essentials of these disease processes this month, with special attention given to diagnostic techniques such as renal function tests, urinalysis, lab studies, and radiological studies. Anti-hypertensive pharmacy should also be learned in more depth this month.
Where To Report
Students will be e-mailed with information about where and when to report.
Requirements
The student will be expected to carry at least 5-6 patients on average at all times that they will actively write daily progress notes on, however they will observe significantly more patients than that on daily rounds with the attending nephrologist. They should assist in the workup/write up of at least 2 admissions or consults each day on average. The student will follow patients on a primary care basis and as a consultative basis in the hospital and may have formal and informal learning sessions to discuss the disease processes and management problems. The students will also work with hemodialysis patients and learn more about the hemodialysis process. BEEPER CALL WILL BE EXPECTED FOR EXTREMELY INTRESTING PATIENTS ONLY (MONDAY NIGHTS THROUGH THURSDAY NIGHTS ONLY) AND AT NO TIMES WILL THE HOURS WORKED EXCEED THE ACGME GUIDLEINES FOR RESIDENTS.
Evaluation
The student will be evaluated by the attending physician based upon the attending physician's observations of the student's performance, thought process and interest level. They will be jedged on knowledge, attitude, ability, level of documentation, communicatin skills, level of progression, attendance, and timeliness. The rotation is pass or fail. The preceptor should give written/verbal feedback to the student approximately halfway through the course and the student should feel free to ask for feedback more frequently.
Notes
Students may not drop course within 30 days of course start date.
