Course Description
The goal of this course is for the student to (1) gain a working knowledge of preoperative evaluation and postoperative care pertaining to anesthesiology, (2) become familiar with the various anesthetic agents and preoperative medications, and (3) learn intubation and airway management techniques. The student will work with a member of a team of anesthesiologists and participate in procedures in the operating rooms, such as intubation and administering anesthesia. When the opportunity exists, the student may participate in inhalation medicine and respiratory therapy. During the rotation, a reasonable degree of proficiency in technical skills should be acquired including airway management, mask ventilation, endotracheal intubation, venous access and nasogastric tube placement. In addition, the student will be introduced to cricothyroidotomy, jet ventilation, fiberoptic intubation and bronchoscopy. The essentials of sedative, analgesic, and anesthetic pharmacology will be taught. The student will learn the fundamentals of cardiorespiratory monitoring and the principles of mechanical ventilation. The student will gain an understanding of local anesthetic pharmacology and the use of those agents in spinal, epidural and plexus anesthesia. The following key topics will be addressed: interpretations of dysrhythmias and their correction; arterial blood gas analysis, fluid resuscitation and electrolyte imbalance, blood and blood product transfusion, management of hypovolemia and cardiogenic shock and cerebral protection. The student will be evaluated on a subjective basis based upon the attending physician's interview with the student and observations of the student's performance
