Accepts students from osteopathic schools.
Visiting students wishing to rotation in orthopaedic surgery are asked to submit a personal statement, including their reason for pursuing orthopaedics, into the VSAS supplemental documents section. Off-block visiting rotation dates are not permitted.
Course Description
Welcome to UAB Orthopaedics. During the next four weeks we hope to give you a glimpse into the life and practice of an orthopaedic surgeon. Below are the course descriptions for each course type. ELECTIVE: The objectives of this clinical course are to introduce students to the evaluation and treatment of orthopaedic conditions. During a four week rotation, students will participate in the daily management of orthopaedic patients on four sub-specialty services. Clinical responsibilities will include daily rounds, clinic, operative cases, as well as participation in weekly conferences. AI-SURGERY: Responsibilities include those of the elective course as well as night call and participation in any conferences pertinent to the rotation (jopurnal club, fracture confernece, residenlt lectures. ______________________________________________________________________________________________ VISITING STUDENT INFORMATION: US LMCE visiting students must have a Step 1 score of 235 and must be enrolled in a mainland U.S. ALLOPATHIC medical school. WRITTEN APPROVAL of the Course Director is required. Send CV and step 1 score for course director's review to the course contact. THE PROGRAM DOES NOT ACCEPT STUDENTS WHO ARE ENROLLED IN MEDICAL SCHOOLS OUTSIDE OF THE CONTINENTAL UNITED STATES.

Requirements
During the four week period, students will integrate into different subspecialty services. Daily responsibilities include patient rounds, clinic, and participation in operative cases. In addition, students are asked to participate in weekly resident lectures and any other confernences pertinent to the rotation.
For those students performing a Surgery AI (or on an inpatient service) rotation, your on-call schedule will be provided by the administrative chief resident. In addition, the student is asked to perform a single presentation during the rotation. This assignment will be given to the student rotator by the Course Director during orientation.
Evaluation
Pass/Fail based on performance evaluated by faculty. No specific examination is given.

The Division of Orthopaedic Surgery at UAB is offering a visiting medical student scholarship. African-Americans, Latinos, Native Americans and women, as well as applicants whose backgrounds bring a unique dimension to our residency program, and who have a minimum Step 1 score of 235, are encouraged to apply. One student will be awarded a scholarship for the academic year. Recipient of the scholarship will be provided on-campus housing, as well as a stipend for a four-week clinical rotation.
