Course Description
This clinical course is designed to provide the student with more extensive exposure in the management of patients requiring surgical critical care. Clinical aspects include the initial evaluation, assessment, resuscitation, and definitive care of critically ill surgical patients as well as critical monitoring and physiologic support. The student serves as an acting intern and directly participates in patient care under the supervision of resident staff and faculty. Routine activities of this service include patient rounds, informal conferences, and scheduled teaching conferences weekly. Students will round on a daily basis with faculty members in the Section and will be responsible for presenting their patients to those faculty members. There is direct supervision of intra-operative experience by the faculty member and house staff. Students will spend 2 weeks in the SICU; the remainder of the rotation can be completed in the NICU or SICU. Alternate scheduling (i.e. 2 weeks on the TBICU Service) will be considered on a case by case basis but must be requested and approved prior to the rotation.
Where To Report
