Prerequisites Successful completion of the core internal medicine, psych and surgery clerkships and any clerkship which covers the content material of the requested elective or acting internship course (e.g. Pediatric Clerkship must be successfully completed prior to taking a Pediatric Elective or AI).

Course Description The goals of this rotation are to (1) gain a broader, in-depth exposure to patients with serious mental illness (schizophrenia, depression, schizoaffective, bipolar diagnoses), (2) develop a more sophisticated and advanced understanding of a bio/psycho/social approach to assessment, diagnosis, and treatment of the seriously mentally ill, and (3) gain an understanding of the complexity of needs of this population, and (4) gain an understanding of the daily medical care of seriously mentally ill patients in the hospital. Mechanisms by which goals/objectives are attained include (1) participating in evaluation of patients with direct attending supervision, (2) direct care- responsible for 3-6 hospitalized patients with serious mental illnesses, (3) direct supervision of daily care by attending, (4) participation in planning for extended care (post hospital) for patients, (5) participating in case conference and team meeting (6) weekly "student only" meeting with attending

If you have previously been on a Birmingham site Psychiatry rotation, you do not need to repeat orientation; please email course contacts for information on where to report.
Requirements Daily rounds M- F, seeing patients while hospitalized. No weekend or night duties required
