Course Description Acting interns become part of the Transfusion Medicine/Apheresis team, which is composed by an attending physician, a fellow and two Pathology residents. During the rotation, they will develop an understanding of: 1. Serology--Basic tests used in transfusion compatibility and immunohematology. 2. Component therapy--The indications and considerations for use of various blood components, including transfusion requirements of patients with special needs. 3. Transfusion reactions - how to evaluate and manage a patient who develops new symptoms during or shortly following a transfusion. 4. Therapeutic apheresis: (1) Develop an understanding of the criteria for and limitations of this technique. (2) Perform as a consultant to clinical services at UAB. (3) Learn to monitor the patient's response to treatment. 5. Patient blood management.

Requirements Basics of clinical medicine and patient care, including familiarity with Impact; the student is expected to be a team player and actively participate in the care of the patients being followed by the service.
