Course Description
Acting interns become part of the Transfusion Medicine/Apheresis team, which is composed by an attending physician, a fellow and two Pathology residents. During the rotation, they will develop an understanding of: 1. Serology--Basic tests used in transfusion compatibility and immunohematology. 2. Component therapy--The indications and considerations for use of various blood components, including transfusion requirements of patients with special needs. 3. Transfusion reactions - how to evaluate and manage a patient who develops new symptoms during or shortly following a transfusion. 4. Therapeutic apheresis: (1) Develop an understanding of the criteria for and limitations of this technique. (2) Perform as a consultant to clinical services at UAB. (3) Learn to monitor the patient's response to treatment. 5. Patient blood management.
