Oxidant Stress and Endothelial Dysfunction
Research in my laboratory focuses on studying mechanisms of oxidative injury to the vasculature under conditions of acute and chronic inflammation. Ongoing studies are defining the role(s) of the neutrophil-derived enzyme myeloperoxidase and its major product hypochlorous acid (HOCl) in the inhibition of endothelial nitric oxide formation. We are currently testing the hypothesis that HOCl induces endothelial dysfunction via conversion of L-arginine to an inactive substrate for nitric oxide production.
